Harvesting sunlight to disinfect water
The supply of safe water, free from microbial contamination, is a universal challenge. Photodisinfection or the use of light to disinfect water has been widely used however many of these light driven processes are costly requiring expensive lamps. This project will investigate the use of visible light for water disinfection. Novel chemicals, or photosensitizers will first be synthesised. Photosensitisers when combined with oxygen and visible light produce reactive oxygen species which can cause lethal damage in microbial cells. The disinfectant efficiency of the process will be evaluated for a range of microorganisms in water. The objective is to develop an efficient, cost- effective and environmentally friendly water purification technique.
