Brief of Description of Project

Petroleum geology of the onshore Ruvuma basin from Mesozoic to Recent, southern Tanzania - northern Mozambique
Recent major oil and gas discoveries in the deep offshore basins along the continental margin of East Africa have revitalised exploration interest in this region. However, despite the fact that equivalents of petroleum play lithologies are exposed onshore, their geology, structure, and potential offshore correlation remain poorly understood. This PhD aims to investigate and resolve the outcrop of the Ruvuma basin and link the results directly to offshore petroleum exploration.

Unique selling points of PhD project in TCD:
projects should offer something that’s not available in Brazil – specific equipment, multi-disciplinarity, aspects of structured programme, links with industry, placements, links with other research groups etc.
The Trinity PhD is a structured PhD and students can access discipline-specific training, as well as generic and transferable skills. All PhD students are eligible to participate in the Innovation Academy which offers a Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship to assist PhD students identify and exploit the value within their research.

Priority Areas

Research Groups

  • Tropical Geology & Exploration Group
The focus of the Tropical Geology & Exploration Research Group is on frontier geological exploration in continental rift settings to help direct petroleum exploration, particularly in developing tropical regions which were previously thought to be uneconomic.
